There are monsters that you’ll only encounter in one location, there are monsters that require careful aiming, slow-moving monsters, fast-moving monsters, evil clowns, swimming monsters, “ Resident Evil 2” (1998) style zombie arms, invincible robots, ranged monsters, tough monsters, brutal boss battles etc… So many monsters! And many of them look incredibly creepy too. Likewise, the fact that virtually all of the game takes place inside a single building really adds something to the atmosphere of the game too.Īnd, oh my god, the monster variety in this game! Casper Croes never lets you get too complacent by continually throwing new types of monsters at you. One of the many eerie things about this game is the complete lack of blood – which makes the monsters seem even more chillingly inhuman. Although not ultra-terrifying, this game can certainly fill you with apprehensive dread, frantic panic and/or a deeply unsettled mood. Yes, this one moment is sort of like the “Resident Evil”/”Suspiria” mash-up that I’ve always wanted to see 🙂 This is AMAZING 🙂Īs for the game’s horror elements, they consist of a creepy mixture of frantic suspense, psychological horror, body horror, claustrophobia, monster horror, clown-based horror, scientific horror, disturbing imagery, creepy characters and story-based horror. Imagine the original “Resident Evil” (1996), but with hints of so much other cool stuff like “ American McGee’s Alice” (2000), “ Alone In The Dark” (1992), Dario Argento’s “ Suspiria” (1977), the carnival areas from games like “ Blood” (1997) or “ Silent Hill 3” (2003) etc…. One of the first things that I will say about this game is… WOW! Although the difficulty level of the version of the game I played last October could best be described as “character-building”, I still had a hell of a lot of fun with it 🙂 After finding her gun and a door key, she begins exploring in the hope of finding a way out…. Sometime later, she wakes up inside a mysterious mansion called “The Dollhouse” wearing a strange blue dress. How 1990s!) called Alisa who has been tasked with tracking down a spy who has stolen some important blueprints.Īfter the train drops Alisa and her colleague Jean-Francois off at a remote rural station, they check the local houses before exploring a nearby path and spotting the spy.Īwww! How adorable! They want to show me their hell-crypt! Set in an unnamed European country during the 1920s, you play as a member of the Royal Armed Defences ( “R.A.D” for short. A little glitchy in one or two parts and a rather steep difficulty curve, but still very playable.Īnyway, let’s take a look at “Alisa”. Still, as someone who isn’t really a fan of “updating” things, the “v1.0 hotfix” version… wasn’t too bad. So, the game today is least somewhat different to the version I played at the time of its release last October. The game seems to have received quite a few more updates ( eg: bug-fixes, optional modern controls, some extra stuff etc…) between the time I wrote the first draft of this review and when I posted it. I should probably point out that, since I prepare articles and reviews months in advance, this review is of the “v1.0 hotfix” version of the game from mid-late October 2021.

Plus, it is that wonderfully rare thing – a modern “retro-style” indie game, made in Unity, which has both a sensible download size ( 200mb approx) and ultra-low system requirements too 🙂

To my delight, there was a DRM-free PC version of it available for sale on itch.io and the decision whether to buy it was an absolute no-brainer, especially since it had been reduced to about twelve quid ( or thirteen and a half Euros) at the time.

Flash forward to last October whilst I was waiting for a DRM-free edition of “Tormented Souls” (2021) to appear on GOG and I happened to notice a full-length “Let’s Play” video for “Alisa” appearing on Youtube. Back in 2020, I played the demo version of an amazing 1990s-style “tank controls and fixed camera angles” indie survival horror game by Casper Croes called “Alisa”.
