#UNWRITTEN CAREY MYCOMICS SERIES#

Given the back and forth game that Carey is playing with the script, it's an important angle for the series artist to be able to work, and Gross completely pulls it off. There's a sketchy, almost childrens' book quality to it that lets the main narrative fold seamlessly into the storybook world and back again. Peter Gross's artwork matches Carey's epic exceedingly well. Carey's shaping of Sue is perfection, and I'm really hoping to see a lot more of her in coming issues. The latter adds a nice dynamic to the title, a bitter camaraderie with Tom amidst a mutual dislike, and opens up a number of story connects (a Tommy Taylor character is named Sue, remember). The enigmatic villainous figure who appeared at the end of last issue appears more extensively, and a new character, Tom's father's old mistress Sue debuts. This issue also makes one crucial addition to the series, allowing a number of strong supporting characters to crop up. Reading The Unwritten feels like getting in on the ground floor of the next big thing. The dialogue and pacing this issue are flawless and Carey at least insinuates that he has a mass of inspiration and material for the series. Carey peppers the issue with small, off-the-cuff lines that make it a more mature book than the remit "real-life Harry Potter" might suggest. It's interesting to note the quiet, dark comedy that hangs over most of The Unwritten #2's script. The search inevitably leads to more questions and oddities as the issue moves along. The second installment of this series finds Tom wildly combing his life for answers, ones which we readers also logically have.
